Deinfibulation Surgery after Female Genital Mutilation

Deinfibulation is a surgical procedure to re-open the vaginal opening of women living with type III Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Type III Female Genital Mutilation, also known as infibulation, includes narrowing the vaginal opening through the stitching of the labia minora and/or labia majora as a covering. It may also involve the removal of the clitoris and clitoral hood. Infibulation constitutes the most severe form of FGM, leading to several health complications, including severe pain, excessive bleeding, local infections, acute urine retention, genital tissue swelling, and even death.

Following the infibulation, scarring, keloids, urinary and vaginal obstruction are complications in the longer term.

Deinfibulation surgery can reestablish the opening of the vagina with the reversal of whatever practices were implemented, restoring both appearance, function, and comfort of the vaginal opening and vulva. This procedure has also aided in reversing many of the painful problems and severe health concerns associated with FGM.
